AI for Accountants: Connect AI to Your Firm’s Data | TPS

AI for Accountants Is Moving Beyond Chatbots

AI is already finding its way into accounting firms.

For many accountants, that started with ChatGPT, Claude, or another AI assistant: drafting a client email, researching a question, summarizing a document, or working through an idea.

But there’s a limit to what a general-purpose AI assistant can do on its own.

Ask it, “How is our firm doing this month?” and it doesn’t know.

Ask which clients have overdue balances, what your current WIP looks like, or how work is progressing across the firm, and it can’t answer unless someone first finds the data and gives it the context.

The next step for AI in accounting is changing that.

What If AI Could Connect to Your Practice Management Software?

If you’re a TPS Cloud Axis Ultimate user, this is what we’re building for you.

TPS Software is preparing early access to Axis by TPS Software MCP, which will allow your AI assistant to securely connect to the firm data you already have in TPS Cloud Axis.

Instead of exporting a report, copying information into a prompt, or explaining your firm’s context every time, you’ll be able to ask questions in plain language and let the assistant retrieve the relevant information from Axis.

For example:

  • “How is our firm doing this month?”
  • “Create an AR report for June.”
  • “Which clients have overdue invoices?”
  • “Show me our outstanding WIP.”

The difference is context.

The AI isn't answering from general accounting knowledge alone. It can use the information your firm already has inside TPS Cloud Axis.

What Is MCP?

MCP stands for Model Context Protocol.

It’s a standard that allows AI assistants to connect with other software and access the information or capabilities that software makes available to them.

Think of it as a bridge.

Without that bridge, an AI assistant can help you think, write, research, and analyze whatever information you manually provide.

With MCP, the assistant can securely retrieve information from connected systems when you ask for it.

For accounting firms, that opens up a much more practical use of AI: asking questions about the business without having to hunt down the underlying report first.

Coming Soon for TPS Cloud Axis Ultimate Users

Axis by TPS Software MCP is coming to TPS Cloud Axis Ultimate. If your firm is already on Ultimate, this capability will be included in your plan.

The initial release will be read-only by design.

That means your AI assistant can retrieve information, answer questions, and help generate reports, but it cannot create tasks, send invoices, or change records in TPS Cloud Axis.

That distinction matters.

Giving AI access to information is very different from giving it permission to change that information. We’re starting with visibility so firms can explore connected AI while maintaining control over actions inside their practice management system.

From Repeated Prompts to Reusable Workflows

Connecting AI to Axis also makes it possible to build reusable skills around the questions and processes your firm handles repeatedly.

Consider accounts receivable.

Instead of explaining the process every time, a firm could create an AR collection follow-up skill that already understands what to do when someone asks:

“Who owes us money?”

The skill could retrieve overdue invoices, organize them by aging, identify the accounts requiring attention, and prepare draft follow-up emails for review.

The same idea could eventually be applied to recurring management questions, reporting routines, workflow reviews, or other firm-specific processes.

Your team doesn't have to become prompt engineers. The process itself becomes reusable.

Why Connected AI Matters for Accounting Firms

Most early AI use in accounting has focused on tasks such as research, writing, summarization, and client communication.

Those uses aren't going away.

But connected AI addresses a different problem: accessing the information already sitting inside the systems your firm uses every day.

Instead of:

Open software → find report → configure report → export data → analyze it

the interaction can become:

Ask a question → get the relevant information

That’s a much more meaningful change to the day-to-day workflow of a firm than simply using AI to write another email.

How the Connection Works

If you’re an Ultimate user and receive early access, connecting Axis to a supported AI assistant takes only a few steps.

In Claude:

  1. Open Connectors.
  2. Select Add custom connector.
  3. Add the Axis by TPS Software MCP connector.
  4. Sign in with your TPS Cloud Axis credentials and authorize the connection.

Once authorized, you can begin asking questions about the information available to you in Axis.

Access remains tied to your TPS Cloud Axis account and permissions.

AI Should Make Your Firm’s Data Easier to Use

Accounting firms don't need AI because they lack data.

They already have client records, time, WIP, billing information, deadlines, workflows, and years of operational history.

The problem is getting to the right information when you need it.

That’s where we see connected AI becoming useful.

Instead of asking AI to know more about accounting in general, Axis by TPS Software MCP lets it understand more about your firm when you ask.

Already using TPS Cloud Axis Ultimate? Ask your TPS Software representative about early access to Axis by TPS Software MCP.

Not on Ultimate yet? Axis by TPS Software MCP will be included with the Ultimate plan at $34/user/month.
